Harlem Opera Theater in partnership with the Connecticut Lyric Opera presents:
AMISTAD
An opera composed by Anthony Davis, Pulizer Prize winner, showcasing the 1839 Amistad Uprising.

Living Connecticut History: A Child of the Amistad with Tammy Denease
Children will learn about the story of the Amistad Rebellion through Margru, a child aboard the schooner Amistad during the 1839 Rebellion and her subsequent fight for freedom in Connecticut.
Registrations open at 12:00 pm on Tuesday, May 27.

Movie Screening of AMISTAD in Darien

At the Darien Library, Heron Room
In honor of Juneteenth, TOUR of St. Luke’s Parish and the Darien Library are offering a special screening of the film Amistad, followed by a discussion led by Chris Menapace, Director of Education at Discovering Amistad.

Nearly 200 years ago, a group of captives aboard the Spanish slave ship La Amistad rose up and demanded their freedom. Their courageous revolt—and the legal battle that followed—became one of the most powerful stories of justice and dignity in American history.

Discovering Amistad will be giving a lecture at the Community Center in East Lyme about the 1839 Amistad Rebellion and its importance to Connecticut and US history.

ISAAC comes to Mystic Seaport
8th grade students from Interdistrict School for Arts and Communication (ISAAC) in New London will be taking a field trip to Mystic Seaport to visit the Amistad Freedom Schooner and learn about the Rebellion of 1839 and the importance place celestial navigation played in the Mende Africans coming to Connecticut.

Docent Training in New London
Discovering Amistad will be assisting with the education of docents from the Thames River Heritage Park. Docents will learn about the important events of the Amistad Rebellion and the local connection to the story, including key abolitionist figures from the city of New London.

Southington High School Program with the Amistad Center: Part 1
Discovering Amistad, in collaboration with the Amistad Center, will be hosting the first part of our joint program. Students will explore the Amistad story through art and discover how it can serve as a powerful tool for social activism.

More than 185 years ago, Dr. Samuel Pieh’s great, great grandfather led the powerful Amistad Uprising and its landmark legal battle which changed the course of history. It is a story that elevates courage, resilience, collaboration, and the determination to obtain human rights for all.
Dr. Samuel Pieh will share the fascinating impact of his great, great grandfather's heroic efforts through the lens of a proud descendent.
The interview will be facilitated by Troy Brown, Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion State of Connecticut Judicial Branch.

Join us on Sunday, September 15th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
Learn about and celebrate Captain Pinkney's trailblazing accomplishments in advancing Maritime Cultural Heritage. As the first captain of Freedom Schooner Amistad, he "charted the course" for the ship's purpose as a floating classroom to advance racial and social justice.
